The renewables industry is thriving – as one of the fastest-growing workforce sectors, it is not hard to see why so many are drawn to it. Offering long-term job stability, generous shift patterns and the opportunity to work towards a greener future is an attractive proposition, particularly so for ex-militants.

With around 50-60per cent of the renewables workforce consisting of veterans, it is an evident natural progression for those looking for their next steps after leaving the army. Veterans are renowned for their solid work ethic, commitment and dedication, making them desirable employees.

Sean Crellin left the British Army after serving as an Infantry Soldier for eight years, a role that saw him operate in all environments and types of conflict. Now looking for employment in the renewables sector, he has recently completed his GWO Technical Training, GWO Basic Safety Training and his IRATA Rope Access Training at Complete Training Solutions (CTS), and is ready to secure employment as a Blade Technician.

Sean explains that whilst he left the military a couple of years ago, he didn’t have the financial means to fund the course right away.

“I always wanted to work in the wind energy industry but I didn’t have the money at the time,” he said.

“I saw that CTS were offering discounts on their courses to veterans which is what drew me in and this will hopefully enable me to get a career in the business.

“I enjoyed all the courses with CTS as they were very professional and gave me more confidence to get into my desired career.”

Sean agrees that the skills gained from his military background will be hugely beneficial for helping him succeed at a career in the wind industry. Having recently attended an interview for a Blade Technician job in Romania, Sean is hopeful that he will be successful..

“My plans for the future are to keep growing and learning more about this industry,” he said. “I still have lots to learn with rope access, but it is something I enjoy doing and I am hopeful that it will take me far in life.”

CTS are proud to be a part of the Armed Forces Covenant, offering a 10% discount on courses to those who have served in the British Army. Our chosen charity is The Standing Tall Foundation, an amazing charity fronted by Andrew Reid, MBE which aims to support veterans and their families.
