Students on mental health first aid course at complete training solutions

At Complete Training Solutions, we’re committed to supporting the armed forces community, and doing our bit to help ex-forces personnel transition from their military career into civilian employment.

We have been in contact with representatives from the charity Tom Harrison House, which provides specialist addiction recovery programmes for UK Armed Forces veterans and emergency services personnel. We were inspired by the work they do in supporting individuals in recovery and were keen to identify ways in which we could work with the charity to further the incredible work they do for our Armed Forces community.

When we were asked to set up specialist mental health first aid courses for a client, we immediately thought of Tom Harrison House. Their staff and volunteers interact on a daily basis with individuals who struggle with addiction and the impact that can have on their mental health. Having trained and confident personnel who can not only recognise if an individual is exhibiting symptoms of mental health issues, but also know how to respond appropriately, is key.

We reached out to the charity and offered to train their personnel for free, and earlier this month twelve of their staff members and volunteers attended our Mental Health First Aid course to learn to support with mental health in the workplace. These attendees are now equipped with the knowledge to start positive conversations about mental health and can act as role models for how to manage, understand and support with mental health.

Speaking about the training, Ian McCarthy, Activities Coordinator from Tom Harrison House said, “Armed with this new knowledge, our volunteers and staff will now be more confident when dealing with any incidents related to mental health, and management can be confident that volunteers are receiving adequate training and education.”

Danielle Kershaw, Head of Renewables at Complete Training Solutions, added “This is part of a wider initiative of support that we offer to the veteran community. We have signed the Armed Forces Covenant and are currently working towards the Gold Award which demonstrates our commitment to helping ex forces personnel integrate back into society. Tom Harrison House does essential work for this community and we were pleased to offer our support through the gift of free training”.
