Is becoming a Wind Turbine Technician a good career?

As a Wind Turbine Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing wind farm turbines on land and at sea. You will be responsible for keeping the wind turbine equipment running smoothly, that includes testing and repairing mechanical and electrical equipment and monitoring its daily performance.

What is the average salary of a Wind Turbine Technician?

The starting salary for a Wind Turbine Technician is around £23,000 and can even reach up to £42,000 depending on level of experience.

How do you become a Wind Turbine Technician?

There are a few pathways to becoming a Wind Turbine Technician, they include;

What are the working hours?

You will typically work between 37-40 hours a week, expect to be on call occasionally.

What will a typical day as a Wind Turbine Technician consist of?

Well, one thing we can guarantee is that no two days will be the same. But generally, your day-to-day duties could include;

  • Installing wind turbine towers on land or sea
  • Fitting electrical, mechanical, or hydraulic equipment
  • Testing turbine blades and control systems
  • Carrying out planned maintenance work
  • Identifying faults and fixing them
  • Recording job details and filling in safety reports
  • Running safety checks on electrical substations and cables

Where will you be working?

If heights and confined spaces are not your thing, a career as a wind turbine technician probably isn’t for you.

Wind Turbine Technicians can work off or onshore, you could be working in remote rural areas. Your working environment could be outdoors and at height – you may need to wear protective clothing!

What skills and knowledge will you need?

Most of the skills you need to become a Wind Turbine Technician are transferrable skills that you probably already have from previous employment or education. These are things such as, problem-solving, knowledge of maths, the ability to work well with others, the ability to use and computer and the relevant software systems.

However, there is a few skills that are specific to the job role they include, knowledge of engineering science and technology, and the ability to repair machines or systems.

Are there opportunities for career progression and development?

There is plenty of opportunities to progress and develop, you could become an authorised technician and be responsible for supervising a technical team and dealing with health and safety.

With even more training you could even progress to operations and Maintenance Manager or Control Systems Engineer.
