OGUK Offshore Medical Test

Course Information

Every offshore worker must pass an Oil & Gas UK (OGUK) Offshore Medical examination. For UK waters and the North Sea, physicians who are approved by the United Kingdom Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA) Health Advisory Committee should carry out the examination and issue certificates. The offshore medical certificate, as it is commonly known, is controlled by UKOOA and renewals are necessary every 2 years irrespective of the age of the offshore worker. Individual operators retain the right to request medical assessments more frequently.

OGUK Offshore Medical

OGUK Offshore medicals are medical examinations undertaken by individuals who wish to work offshore on an oil rig or offshore wind farm.

This test is the most widely required offshore medical and workers are required to hold a valid in-date certificate before departing which is valid for two years and allows you to work in the UK sector and North Sea.

Workers who operate offshore often require medicals to clear them as safe to work. The OGUK Medical assessment forms an important part of offshore operations, protecting the employee and employer from potential risks.

The OGUK Offshore Medical Test consists of:

  • Chester Step Test
  • Screening
  • Completion of Patient Questionnaire
  • Urinalysis – routine urine test with immediate result
  • BMI – measurement of height, weight and calculation of Body Mass Index
  • Near Distance and Colour Vision
  • Pulse and Blood Pressure Measurement
  • Lung Function Test (peak flow)
  • Audiogram (hearing test)
  • Consultation with a doctor

The Chester Step Test Medical is designed to test the general fitness of a delegate and is often a pre-requisite for working in roles requiring a basic level of physical fitness.

It is possible to take this test on its own here.

Oil & Gas UK (OGUK) sets a standard of fitness to be reached by anyone working in the industry. That UK standard is being increasingly accepted as a worldwide indicator of health and fitness for anyone working in the oil and gas industry.

The standard dictates that a full medical should be taken to work onsite. The Chester Step Test forms part of the OGUK Offshore Medical Test, which you can book with CTS.
